Meet B.O.B.
The Big Oily Beast

About This Aircraft
The Beech SNB is a U.S. Navy/Marine variant of the civilian Model 18 Twin Beech. More than half of the 10,000 aircraft produced between 1937 and 1970 were delivered to the U.S. military. Military variants include the C-45, AT-7, AT-11, SNB, F-2, and JRB.
These aircraft served a variety of roles, including light transport, photo-reconnaissance, and training for navigation, bombing, and gunnery. Many Twin Beech aircraft continue to fly today, having found new life as affordable, reliable light cargo planes after military service.
Our beloved B.O.B. was manufactured by Beech in Wichita, Kansas, in 1943 as a Navy/Marine SNB-2 (s/n 4664). In 1954, Beech remanufactured it, and the Navy redesignated it as an SNB-5P, a photo-reconnaissance trainer. In 1962, it was further redesignated as an RC-45J. N4207 served at NAS/MCAS Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii and NAS Pensacola in Florida—both key aviation training facilities before World War II.
Since 1983, the Commemorative Air Force has restored B.O.B. to flying condition, with the Indiana Wing taking ownership in 2014 and completing a full restoration for public rides.
About This Unit
The Indiana Wing of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) is a flying museum established in 1978. The Wing maintains and flies a Fairchild PT-26 Cornell, a Vultee BT-13 Valiant, a PT-17 Stearman, and a Beech SNB (RC-45J). Member-owned aircraft include a Stinson L-5 Sentinel, AT-6 Texan, and PT-17 Stearman. The Indiana Wing has aircraft based at Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport (UMP), Kokomo Municipal Airport (OKK), Terre Haute Airport (HUF), and Sheridan Airport (5I4).
Each summer, the CAF hosts Barnstorming Days at various airport locations. The event, filled with living history, honor, and fun for the entire family, has three main goals: honoring veterans, showcasing warbirds, and inspiring youth. Attendees can experience the sights, sounds, and smells of flying WWII-era warbirds firsthand, with opportunities to take rides and immerse themselves in aviation history.
